The Purpose of the "Courses" Page

The "Courses" page is meant to show you connections between sustainability and core courses in a particular business major. In some cases, these connections may not yet be a part of the course. We are working on that! If you are a student, you can ask for these connections to be a part of the course. If you are a faculty member, you can integrate them in as you see fit.

Course descriptions are adapted from the Penn State University Bulletin.  This is not a comprehensive list of courses in the major. Learn more about this major at Penn State Smeal Undergraduate Education.

MGMT 301: Basic Management Concepts

MGMT 301 Basic Management Concepts exposes undergraduate students to the fundamental principles and basic concepts of management, with emphasis on organizational design, management processes, leadership, motivation, and managing teams and individuals in a global business environment.

Sustainable management questions to consider:

  • How would you explain the impact of sustainability on the practice of business management and leadership?
  • When considering sustainability, what is the importance of strategy, leadership, and culture?
  • In the process of management (planning, organizing, leading, controlling), where does an understanding of sustainability belong?

MGMT 326: Organizational Behavior and Design

MGMT 326 Organizational Behavior and Design serves as a foundation by covering the concepts, theories, and methods of managing people and designing organizations. Issues and challenges of managing at different organizational levels (individual, group, project, and total organization) are discussed and illustrated with real-world examples.

Sustainable management questions to consider:

  • How can managers inspire and organize employees to participate in sustainability initiatives?
  • What should managers know about the organization’s values and dynamics before planning sustainability integration?
  • How can managers integrate sustainability into a firm’s organizational structure? Then, how will managers present the business case to C-Suite executives?

MGMT 451W: Business, Ethics, and Society

MGMT 451W Business, Ethics, and Society is an advanced examination of social, ethical, legal, and economic responsibilities of those who must make and execute challenging business decisions and manage others who do. Sustainable management questions to consider:

  • What are companies’ responsibilities to the larger community to help ensure a sustainable future?

MGMT 471: Strategic Management

MGMT 471 Strategic Management focuses on the management of the firm using a strategic perspective to grow and combat issues that influence competitive performance. The strategic perspective emphasizes the firm as the unit of analysis (e.g., analyzing how a firm competes in its industry), and it addresses key decisions that have a long-term impact on the structure and performance of the organization (e.g., diversifying into a new business or changing the company’s strategy).

Sustainable management questions to consider:

  • What are ways to assess sustainable performance?
  • What are ways that strategic leaders can build sustainability into their strategies?
  • How can strategic leaders structure their organizations and establish employee control systems to implement sustainability-related goals?

BA 342: Socially Responsible, Sustainable and Ethical Business Practice

BA 342 Socially Responsible, Sustainable and Ethical Business Practice examines actions taken by corporations that impact global citizenship, environmental sustainability, and the economic stability of international societies. It further looks at relationships, rights, and responsibilities between businesses, business decision-makers and their stakeholders.

Sustainable management questions to consider:

  • How does the world define sustainability both from the nation state and corporation perspectives?
  • How are businesses using sustainability to drive performance?
  • Where does environmental, social, and governance (ESG) fit in with respect to the stakeholder model of the corporation?
  • What major groups drive sustainability? Can we explain GRI, Sustainability Accounting Standards Board, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and many others?
  • Can we explain how population, intensity of resource usage, and climate change are fundamental drivers of sustainability? How do we apply the lenses of science, politics, and economics to the drivers?
