ACCOUNTING & SUSTAINABILITY
How Will Sustainability Help with Careers in This Major?
Knowledge about how sustainability relates to accounting will be very beneficial to your career. The research shared here demonstrates that most large companies–and therefore the accounting firms supporting them–publish sustainability reports. Some are even publishing integrated reports, as discussed on the “Concepts” page.
As an accounting major, you will be able to measure, summarize, and assure sustainability performance. Specifically, certified public accountants (CPAs) who know sustainability accounting will be able to advise clients regarding reporting on sustainable initiatives, taking advantage of tax policy changes, and generally making smart business decisions while considering social and environmental risks and opportunities. As the field of sustainable assurance develops, CPAs will also need to be qualified to provide verification that the reports are reasonably accurate and appropriate.
Sustainability-Focused Career Pathways
While the field of accounting does not yet provide many entry-level sustainability jobs, the following sustainability accounting positions are possible roles that would allow you to include sustainability in your career path:
Public Accounting Careers
Public accounting is still a developing field, but these firms are incorporating sustainability into their organizations and culture. The “Big Four” accounting firms have international special teams that offer assurance and advisory services to clients who are implementing sustainability. These teams typically fill their positions with experienced individuals who can offer expertise on clients’ sustainability challenges and opportunities. Smaller public accounting firms most likely discuss sustainability with their clients as well; however, they might not necessarily have teams that specialize in that field yet. Regardless of the level of client engagement, a vast majority of public accounting firms are incorporating sustainable practices.
Corporate Accounting Careers
Most of the companies that recruit corporate accountants are engaging in sustainability–and soon all will be. This means that as the importance of sustainability grows within the organization, the importance of sustainability within the role of a corporate accountant will also grow. As mentioned above, tasks of a corporate accountant at a sustainability-focused organization could include assisting with the preparation of the sustainability report, interpreting tax policy changes, and considering sustainability factors in various decision-making processes.
