MANAGEMENT & SUSTAINABILITY

Stakeholder Engagement

Why does a business exist? That is the first and foundational management question. In simple terms, we could say that it exists to make money for shareholders, those who have invested their capital in the enterprise. We could also say the firm exists to provide value to its stakeholders, of which shareholders are only one constituent and that includes employees, customers, suppliers, the community, and even the natural environment.

So which is it? Does the company exist primarily for shareholders or a much larger web of stakeholders?

In 2018, Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manaager, marked a shift toward “stakeholder capitalism” when he stated a company “must not only deliver financial performance, but also show how it makes a positive contribution to society.” In his most recent Letter to CEOs he wrote:

“In today’s globally interconnected world, a company must create value for and be valued by its full range of stakeholders in order to deliver long-term value for its shareholders. It is through effective stakeholder capitalism that capital is efficiently allocated, companies achieve durable profitability, and value is created and sustained over the long-term.”

Edelman, the global communications firm, has been studying trust for 20 years. Evidence suggests that people’s trust in government, media and business has been unstable at best. People take to the streets and to social media to express their frustration. “We see an even greater expectation of business to lead as trust in government continues to spiral,” Edelman explains on its Trust Barometer site.

Engaging with stakeholders is the only path forward.

Definition of Stakeholder Engagement
“Stakeholder engagement
is the process used by an organisation to engage relevant stakeholders for a clear purpose to achieve agreed outcomes. It is now also recognised as a fundamental accountability mechanism, since it obliges an organisation to involve stakeholders in identifying, understanding and responding to sustainability issues and concerns, and to report, explain and answer to stakeholders for decisions, actions and performance.”

A Framework for Taking Action on Stakeholder Engagement

Businesses for Social Responsibility (BSR) is a sustainability consulting organization that works with companies around the world and has offices in Asia, Europe, and North America. Since 2011, BSR has worked with hundreds of companies using a 5-step approach to stakeholder engagement.

Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) Stakeholder Engagement model
  1. Engagement Strategy: Set vision and level of ambition for future engagement, and review past engagements.
  2. Stakeholder Mapping: Define criteria for identifying and prioritizing stakeholders, and select engagement mechanisms.
  3. Preparation: Focus on long-term goals to drive the approach, determine logistics for the engagement, and set the rules.
  4. Engagement: Conduct the engagement itself, ensuring equitable stakeholder contribution and mitigating tension while remaining focused on priorities.
  5. Action Plan: Identify opportunities from feedback and determine actions, revisit goals, and plan next steps for follow-up and future engagement.

Stakeholder Engagement in Action: Responsible Palm Oil at Dr. Bronners

Dr. Bronner’s is a soap and personal care products company with sustainability and social impact at their core. However, palm oil is an essential ingredient and a product that has rightfully come under great scrutiny over the last decade. Palm oil plantations too often come from deforesting large tracts of native forests and result in a loss of subsistence livelihoods and biodiversity.

With a deep commitment to stakeholder engagement, Dr. Bronner’s has worked for many years with their supplier communities to create a source of responsible, regenerative palm oil. They have invested millions in local schools, medical facilities and in education and equipment for farming families. Learn more about this example of stakeholder engagement example at Dr. Bronners.
